iHerb Giveaway!

BRM-00452-mI’m so lucky. Seriously, besides an awesome husband, adorable dog and enviable job, the generous folks at iherb.com gave me a $50 shopping spree – and one to give away to a reader!  First I’m going to tell you about what I picked out and why, and then tell you how you can get a chance to win a $50 shopping spree of your own! BRM-00940-m

I went to the website, and at first wasn’t sure what to look at because the store is mostly supplements. As you may know, I am not big on supplements. I take fish oil and vitamin D, but that’s it. But luckily I spied the category for Grocery and Food, and thought “Oh good, there’s food on here. I do food!”

And there were plenty of great things to pick from, especially for someoneEDN-00079-m who likes to bake, like me! They also had a lot of sweeteners, flours, nuts, seeds, and beans…..I spent a long time looking around – the selection they have is huge! I picked out some products I already know and love (milled flaxseed, dried tart cherries), as well as some things I’ve never had before (Bob’s Red Mill gluten free flour, organic quinoa, Arrowhead Mills Oat flour, and some yerba mate tea that sounded interesting). Expect to see these items appearing soon in recipes here on AskGeorgie! Since the number of people looking for gluten-free recipes is growing, I thought I’d try out making some gluten free recipes of my own, and now I have some more goodies to fuel that experiment! Looking forward to telling you how it goes!

NOW-06311-mEven if you aren’t just in the market for food, check out iherb for natural health and beauty items, and of course every supplement under the sun. Shipping is cheap, and free for large orders.

So, how can you win a $50 shopping spree of your own to iherb.com? Leave a comment on this post and tell me three things:

1. What is your favorite recipe or post here on AskGeorgie (there’s over 200 posts to date!)

2. Suggest one health/nutrition topic you’d like to hear more about.

3. Tell me what kind of recipes you want to see.  More seafood? Pasta? Gluten free? Chocolate?

The winner, chosen at random, will win a $50 dollar shopping spree at iherb.com, including shipping! You do have to register at the iherb site; I did, it takes just a minute, and the cool thing is if you want to reorder you just login and select the items from your past orders, you don’t have to look through the whole store again. So if that gluten free flour is a hit, I know where I can get more of it in two clicks!  Entries will be accepted for one week from today, so by the end of the day on 4/28, time’s up! (Sorry to say, but this contest is only open to U.S. residents.) Good luck!

My favorite post was your recent Asian Grilled Eggplant recipe… it was delicious! I’d love to see more recipe posts. I’ve tried a lot of recipes from your blog and I’m happy to say that we must have similar taste buds because I’ve had a lot of success with your recipes! I’d love to see more vegetable-based recipes in the future. Thanks for hosting such a great giveaway!

    1) My favorite recipe (it’s hard to choose just one), I’d have to say is the roasted chickpeas because they’re a fast, crunchy, yet healthy snack, and I love snacks.
    2) I’d like to hear more about light foods that won’t fill you up too much but boosts your energy.
3)I would definitely like to see more healthy chocolate recipes.

    1. I loved the recipe for the marinara sauce. I served it over spaghetti for my kids and husband; I added a ton of vegis and served it over spinach for me. It was delicious. 2. I would like to hear more about your workouts and how to stay lean and injury free while running. 3. I would love to see more vegi recipes.

I started this and I somehow forgot to finish, so here we go again.

    1. My favorite is definitely the roasted cannellini beans. Or the calamari. If I could afford the squid, I’d buy it right now and make some. My boyfriend refuses to eat it though, because he says it’s “Bait, not food.”
    2. I would really like it if you talked about fad diets like low-carb, cabbage soup, all that stuff. A lot of people still believe that these diets are healthy, when they’re definitely not.
    3. I would love more savory snack-type recipes.

    2. Suggest one health/nutrition topic you’d like to hear more about. healthy lunches for kids

    3. Tell me what kind of recipes you want to see. Simple, healthy dinner ideas for working moms.

    1. I’ve only tried two recipes from this site so far, since I only just found it recently thanks to Precision Nutrition’s interview. My favorite was the chicken/gorgonzola flatbread melts. My boyfriend recently visited for a week (long distance relations… not fun) and he made these for me when I came home from work one day. They were delicious!! I tried the cheesecake cups, but will have to try them again since I decided the splenda tasted gross. Will try again with Sucanat, probably slightly less than called for in the recipe. I’m sure they’ll turn out much better.
    2. I’m not sure if this is already addressed on this site, but I’d like to learn more about portable snacks that don’t need to be refrigerated or microwaved. I love string cheese and hard boiled eggs, but both need to be refrigerated…
    3. I’d like to see some more easy recipes, with high protein and limited carbs. I’m a carb freak and so I try to keep one meal pretty low carb, otherwise my macros get crazy!

  • ephraim

    1. I’m a new reader, but so far the recipe i most want to try is the shrimp and shirataki salad.

    2. I’d like to read more about the emotional and introspective skills involved in eating competently: like, a step by step plan to develop the ability to listen to my body’s signals around hunger and fullness, for instance.

    3. I’d be thrilled about more lower-carb vegetarian recipes that include some protein. And also things that can be easily made ahead and packed.

  • Marian

    1. Since I love fresh and flavorful, it’s hard to come up with just one:) The coconut curry offers much variation with the vegetables and protein, the tips for a smooth sauce makes me want to make it now, so I’ll stick with that recipe. In all honesty, I haven’t seen one that I wouldn’t try!
    2. As you are a dietician with an athletic bent, perhaps offering a tidbit of information along the lines of what activity would equal the amount of calories contained in your recipe or simply reminding the readers that an everyday activity encourages better health might help get us moving in small increments. For example, to know what one “healthy brownie” “costs” in exercise might help me eat only one:)
    3. Since menopause, I must watch carbs or I balloon. It made me laugh to see your article about not gaining weight while on a cruise vacation as I just returned from one and have been afraid to get on a scale! I actually did most of what you suggested (except for the gym!) and still fit into my bathing suit comfortably…a quick note to all upcoming “cruisers,” pack some loose fitting clothes for the end of the voyage just in case!

    1. Farinata with Zucchini & Eggplant
    2. Peri-Workout nutrition
    3. low-carb!

  • Hey Georgie! I recently starting reading askGeorgie and love it so far. It will be going on my blogroll soon :)

    1) My favorite recipe thus far is the Asian Grilled Eggplant. Making veggies fun to eat is a must in my book.
    2) I’d like to hear your take on fueling exercise w/ maybe suggestions for pre & post workout snacks.
    3) More baked goods recipes would be great. I read that you like to bake – I love it too. It’s such a good way to introduce people to healthy cooking… “Oh by the way, I made that with wheat flour & no egg yolks.”

  • I think the Almond Butter cookies http://askgeorgie.com/?p=73 are my fav of all the recipes, although I do like the Sushi Bowl one as well http://askgeorgie.com/?p=2109.

  • ..ugh sorry, I hit submit too soon.

    2. I’d like to see more on making healthy eating choices in the real world. The article you did on avoiding weight gain on a cruise was great, and very practical.

    3. More fat-free, gluten-free and sugar-free (not necessarily all in the same recipe but if so, great!)

    thank you for the giveaway.

  • Wow what a great Giveaway!
1.) I love your Yellow Split Pea and coconut milk soup recipe!
2.)I would love to hear more about portion control and also what type of foods to mix at meals- like a daily eating plan that is healthy. I’m terrible with that.
3.) I would love some veggie packed meals and gluten free dishes!

  • Deanna G.

    1. My favorite recipe was the Red Thai Curry with Cauliflower!

    2. I’d like to hear more about diabetic cooking.

    3. I want to see vegetarian & low cal recipes!

  • Your Faux Fried Calamari is my favorite! That was easy!

  • I’d love to hear more about glycemic index in regards to insulin resistance.

  • More diabetic-friendly recipes…and seafood.

…I’m just now realizing I don’t think I was supposed to leave separate entries for each question. Sorry!

  • Monica

    1. My favorite recipe is the roasted cannellini beans. They were the most unusual thing I have tried in a while! I also liked the Thai curry with cauliflower in the slow cooker because it helped me to branch out and try a lot of new things (Thai red curry paste, cauliflower…)
    2. One topic I would like to see you post about is how to effectively fuel for workouts, both before and after, and I am planning to run a half marathon later this year so I am particularly interested in fueling for endurance events like that. On that note, I would like to see some suggestions of what to eat during a race that is not made of refined sugar or mystery ingredients – I don’t like gatorade, gels, etc. so I am looking for some other suggestions. I would also love to get some ideas (even just a list) for low-calorie snacks. I am working on snacking less, but sometimes I can’t help it!
    3. I would like to see more one-dish type recipes or meals that you can easily make a main and side at the same time, for those of us less coordinated in the kitchen. Any kind of casserole would be interesting, or one-skillet type stuff. I also love to see more unusual (but not unattainable) ingredients such as the Thai red curry paste. Maybe more lunchtime recipes like wraps or main-course salads. I will be happy with anything you post! :)

  • Alexis

I love the butternut squash fries! I’ve had them twice in the last week and I don’t think I’ll stop any time soon.

I’d be interested in hearing how one should eat for fat loss versus how one should eat for maintenance. Finally, I’d just like to see more veggie recipes, using as many vegetables possible. I always get excited to try a new one! Thanks!

  • 1) Easily the pita chips. The convenience they’ve provided between classes is perfect to combine with cut-up veggies and hummus.

    2) Acid reflux. My mom suffers from it and it restricts a lot of her food choices on top of her being a vegetarian.

    3) More quick and in a jiffy recipes work for me. Regular meals aren’t a problem, but something in 5-10 minutes stumps me at times.
